Unleash Your Inner Chef with a Magical Recipe from the Underworld
Discovering Culinary Creativity in Gaming Culture
A Personal Journey into Cooking
You might be surprised to learn that I have a passion for cooking. Since moving in with my fiancée, Rachael, I’ve spent countless hours experimenting in the kitchen, whipping up healthy meals for us to enjoy. While I love creating my own recipes, I’ve also developed an appreciation for pop culture cookbooks inspired by video games and other media. My collection includes gems like the official World of Warcraft cookbook, a pizza cookbook featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Snoop Dogg’s culinary guide, and most recently, Un-cook Yourself: A Ratbag’s Rules for Life by Australian comedian Nat’s What I Reckon (which I’ll review soon).
When I received a delightful recipe from the Australian PR team behind Magic: The Gathering, inspired by their latest set Modern Horizons 2, I couldn’t wait to share it. This recipe is based on a “Food” Token card—a fun nod to both gaming and cooking.
Chef’s Surprise: A Recipe Inspired by Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar
The Story Behind the Dish
To celebrate the launch of its new card set Modern Horizons 2, Wizards of the Coast has crafted an intriguing dish called “Chef’s Surprise.” This recipe draws inspiration from one of MTG’s legendary characters—Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar (or Asmor for short). Known as the author of “The Underworld Cookbook,” Asmor made her mark in MTG lore back in 1993 with her impressively long name.
In her story, she struck a deal with a Lord of the Pit: prepare meals for seven years or become dinner herself! Now you can channel your inner chef and create this devilishly delicious dish.
Ingredients You’ll Need
For Chicken:
- 2 Maryland chicken thighs (bones removed)
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/4 onion (grated)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon grated garlic
- 1 teaspoon grated ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon chili pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
- Pinch of cinnamon powder
For Stuffing:
- 600g ground beef
- 5g gelatin powder
- Salt (to taste)
- Coarsely ground black pepper (to taste)
For Sauce:
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For Toppings:
- Daikon radish
- Apples (10 or as desired)
- Grapes (to taste)
- Green leaves (for garnish)
- Crab leg
- Skewers
Step-by-Step Directions
Preparing Your Ingredients
- Chicken Prep: Start by removing excess skin and fat from your Maryland chicken thighs. Use a fork to pierce through the skin.
- Marinate Chicken: In a bowl, mix all chicken ingredients thoroughly before marinating them in your refrigerator for at least three hours.
- Make Stuffing: In another bowl, combine stuffing ingredients and knead until well mixed; refrigerate until needed.
Cooking Process
- Sear Chicken Thighs: Heat olive oil over medium-high heat in a frying pan; place marinated chicken thighs skin-side down until browned on both sides before transferring them onto a plate.
- Prepare Sauce: Remove any browned bits from your pan; add sauce ingredients and let simmer gently.
- Preheat Oven & Shape Daikon Fangs: Preheat your oven to about 200°C while cutting daikon into quarters or thirds depending on size—shape these pieces like fangs.
Baking Instructions
- Assemble Dish on Baking Sheet: Line it with parchment paper using half of your stuffing mixture as base; place remaining stuffing atop between two chicken thighs.
- Add Daikon Fangs & Bake First Round: Fill gaps between thighs with one set of daikon fangs before baking at 200°C for about 20 minutes.
- Brush Sauce & Final Bake: After initial baking time is up, brush cooked dish with sauce then bake again at 200°C for another 10 minutes while replacing cooked fangs with uncooked ones reserved earlier.
Serving Suggestions
Once done baking:
- Serve beautifully garnished on plates alongside green leaves, grapes, apples—and don’t forget those decorative crab legs skewered elegantly!
Now you’re ready to impress friends or family alike! Enjoy this magical culinary experience that combines gaming lore with delicious flavors right outta Asmor’s kitchen!
