Exploring the Allure of Citrus: A Fresh Take on Yuri
First Impressions of Citrus
Yuzu Aihara’s New Journey
Everywhere I turn, discussions about Citrus seem to be buzzing. Initially, I was hesitant to dive into another yuri series after my experience with Netsuzou TRap -NTR-. However, after reading various comments in community forums, my curiosity piqued and I decided to give it a shot. Was it worth the time? Let’s find out!
Yuzu Aihara is a new transfer student at an all-girls school who aims to make a memorable first impression. She dresses up in stylish clothes and applies makeup, only to realize that her efforts clash with the school’s strict dress code. This misstep leads her to an encounter with Mei, the student council president, who confiscates Yuzu’s phone in a rather overbearing manner.
Unexpected Twists and Turns
Things take an unexpected twist when Yuzu learns that her mother has remarried Mei’s father—making them sisters! To complicate matters further, Mei’s grandfather oversees the school where Yuzu now attends. The plot thickens as Mei unexpectedly kisses Yuzu at the end of the first episode.
As we delve deeper into their relationship dynamics, we witness Yuzu grappling with her feelings for Mei while Mei adopts classic tsundere behavior by denying any romantic interest. Although on paper this storyline may seem typical for yuri genres (and it is), its execution keeps viewers engaged.
Character Development: The Heart of Citrus
Engaging Personalities
One aspect that stands out is how quickly characters are fleshed out; they possess depth and backstory that makes them intriguing. However, I do have some reservations about Yuzu’s character traits—her abrasive personality can be off-putting at times. Yet she balances this with enough charm to remain likable throughout.
Musical Elements: Opening and Ending Themes
OP Thoughts: nano.RIPE’s Contribution
When it comes to music selection for Citrus, I’m not particularly fond of nano.RIPE based on their previous work like “Non Non Biyori.” Their opening song didn’t resonate well with me due to its somewhat grating vocals. Surprisingly though, their track “Azalea” caught my attention; its upbeat alternative rock vibe complements their signature sound beautifully.
ED Thoughts: Mia REGINA’s Performance
On another note regarding musical contributions from Mia REGINA—while their opening for Code Realize had stunning elements in its TV Size version (“Kalmia”), the full version left much to be desired due to dissonance issues. Conversely, “Dear Teardrop” didn’t quite hit home for me either; perhaps it felt too campy or just didn’t align with my tastes.
Is Citrus Worth Watching?
Absolutely! Despite having a seemingly generic premise—a girl falling for another girl who pretends not to reciprocate—the show manages to captivate through rich character development and engaging storytelling. The characters feel multi-dimensional rather than flat or one-note—a crucial element that will likely keep audiences hooked as they navigate through emotional complexities together.
while relying heavily on character arcs can be risky within such familiar narratives as “Girl A likes Girl B,” early episodes suggest that Citrus has what it takes not only survive but thrive within this genre!
